Notable BECCS Projects Around the World
Country: United Kingdom
Region: East Yorkshire
Location: Selby map..
Project Highlights:
- Will generate energy from combustion of biomass in the form of wooden pellet originating from managed forests, whilst capturing 8 million tonnes of C02 annually
- Captured C02 to be transported to subsea storage locations through integration with East Coast Cluster which aims to create a common infrastructure for C02 storage in the Humber and Teesside regions of England
- Part of the Zero Carbon Humber initiative transform the UK's Humber region into the word's first net-zero carbon industrial area by 2040
- November 2011: Start of the pilot project phase with an investment of approximately $84 million.
- November 2014: Completion of the pilot project, successfully capturing and sequestering 1 million tonnes of CO2.
- November 2017: Commencement of Phase 2, significantly expanding capacity with a total investment of around $208 million.
- As of 2019: IL-CCS recognized as the world's largest BECCS project, capable of capturing over 1 million tonnes of CO2 annually.

Country: Sweden
Location: Värtan, Stockholm map..
Project Highlights:
- A 'waste to heat' plant in Stockholm which generates energy through the combustion of agricultural residue
- In November 2021 selected as one of seven initiatives to share €1.1 billion from the EU Innovation Fun
- Part of Stockholm's endeavours to become C02 neutral by 2050
Stakeholders: Stockholm Exergi, EU Innovation Fund
Carbon Capture Technology: WHO??? Hot Potassium Carbonate (HPC) - CO2 from flue gases interacts under pressure with a water-based solvent containing potassium carbonate to form potassium bicarbonate. Reducing the pressure reverses the reaction, releasing CO2 for capture, and water.
C02 Capture Capacity: 800,000 tonnes of CO2 annually
Storage Location: Northern Lights CO2 subsea storage facility located offshore from Øygården, near Bergen on the west coast of Norway. Approximately 3 km depth in the Johansen formation south of the Troll field. map..
CO2 Transportation: By ship to Northern Lights storage facility on west coast of Norway
Project Status: Planning phase
